In Native American culture, a dreamcatcher, or dream snare, is a handmade object based on a willow hoop, on which loose net or web is woven. The dreamcatcher is decorated with personal and sacred items such as feathers and beads. It is believed that a dreamcatcher changes a person’s dreams or…
Native Americans do not have one homologous culture. Dream catchers are a creation from the Ojibwa tribe. They were meant to be used by children to protect them from nightmares, but would decay slowly and fall apart when the child was old enough. They are not for adults, and they are certainly not for non-Natives, possibly not even for Native Americans who aren’t Ojibwe.
Now, I fully understand that paganism and Wicca borrow from many cultures- our gods, our holidays, our ceremonies- but as a Wiccan who just so happens to be Native American, I’d appreciate it if this borrowing was not done without deep understanding and grave respect to what has been done to the people of these cultures. Please.
